How to fix dry, thin, wrinkled lips. Tips for mature lips.

My lips had begun looking like I’d marched across a vast desert for days, without a drop of water.

Sometime after the age of 40, you’ll notice that your lips are looking thinner and dryer. Chapping, flaking and dryness are all very common issues.

Heck Yeah. It’s pretty awesome. “I can’t wait until I’m older and my lips get all thin and dry!”, said no one ever.

But fear not! This does not have to be the end of your beautiful pout!

Adding a few simple products into your routine and learning a few new makeup techniques can help tremendously with the issues we face with our lips as we age. I’ve got a few easy steps to help you improve and fix thin, wrinkled lips.

Dryness

If your lips are constantly dry, then that needs to be remedied first. A lot of people will recommend scrubbing and brushing dry lips, but if you’re lips are cracked from a lack of moisture this can actually exacerbate the problem. Try a more gentle approach to get your lips healthy again and then an occasional, gentle lip scrub will work well for you.

I absolutely swear by Hanalei Lip Treatment! It has 100% kukui nut oil from Hawaii. It’s an oil that contains vital fatty acids and vitamins A, C, and E, known to heal and repair dryness. The brand is cruelty-free, paraben free, and sulfate free. After 2 days of using this treatment, you will notice the most amazing difference! I recommend using this during the day and at night until your lips are completely moisturized and healthy, then just apply at night before bed. This will completely moisturize and rejuvenate dry lips so fast! You can buy it here.

For maintenance of your now healthy and moisturized lips, I still recommend Treat Beauty. These jumbo lip balms smell so dang good, you’ll have a hard time not snacking on them! Their byline says “Every Treat is made with ingredients so pure, you can eat them.” I may or may not have done this.  They contain Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Beeswax, Organic Cocoa Butter and Vitamin E. In short- they are the perfect remedy for keeping your lips moist all day long. They are the absolute BEST lip balm you’ll ever use. (This brand is also cruelty, paraben and sulfate free.)

After your lips are healthy I can also recommend the Treat Beauty lip scrub.

This buffs away dry skin revealing beautiful, soft lips. This stuff contains a blend of exfoliating Fair Trade sugar (SUGAR!) and moisturizing coconut oil. And y’all- it comes in a stick! So the typical mess associated with lip scrubs is also eliminated which is a huge plus for me! After you scrub away any flakes, apply the lip balm to keep your lips nourished and hydrated all day.

In addressing dry lips, it goes without saying that staying hydrated by drinking water is one of the most important things you can do….for your whole body!

Protection

Your now moist and healthy lips need to be protected. If you use a mineral sunscreen, don’t forget to dab a little on your lips! If mineral sunscreen isn’t your thing, then grab a sunscreen made just for your lips.

Make Them Look Fuller

I’m not talking about Kylie Jenner fullness here, just healthy looking fullness. One of the best topicals that you can use is our dear old friend, hyaluronic acid. When applied topically on your lips, hyaluronic acid gives the appearance of fuller, plumper lips by hydrating the surface of your lips. Think of it like a lip balm dialed up to MAXIMUM. It fills the skin cells in your lips with moisture so your lips look their most naturally full. Sadly, it’s only temporary, but it’s quick, safe and easy to do. I use the hyaluronic acid serum by Go Pure every day. (Use Code FRESHAIRANDFALSELASHES10 for 10% off) Go Pure also contains Vitamin C, Vitamin E and Green Tea which makes it the best, in my book for both value ($14 w/ code) and effectiveness. You can shop it here: Go Pure Hyaluronic Acid.

If you don’t mind the tingling sensation, “lip plumping” glosses can also make your lips appear fuller by increasing the blood flow to the lips. I’ve linked some of the most popular ones below.

I hope this has given you some tools to understand how to fix dry, thin, wrinkled lips! I will do a separate post on applying makeup to mature lips, because there are definitely a few tips and tricks to help with fullness and to prevent feathering, so stay tuned for that. (Tip: Shop Kat Von D’s “Everlasting” line for budge-proof, feather-proof lip colors!)
