Over the years, I’ve had a few good skin facials and I’ve also had facials that left me feeling like someone had rubbed a generic lotion around on my face for 20 minutes, wiped it off and sent me out the door. A GOOD facial will leave your skin positively glowing. While I doubt I’ll ever achieve the look that a true professional can achieve, I’m always looking for at home facial treatments that will deliver even a hint of that coveted polished skin.
One of the top expert consumers of facials is Lisa over at The Sequinist. Her very first facial was given to her by the Gold Standard of facialists, Marcia Kilgore! Remember when I told you about MK’s fabulous new venture Beauty Pie? Yeah- now THAT’S a woman who knows how to give a facial. I enjoyed reading about Lisa’a most recent facial because she really gives you a feel for what all the facial fuss is about.
Getting a professional facial is a luxury. While I’d love to be able to schedule them monthly, that’s just not in the cards at the moment. But being the slave to skincare that I am, I’m constantly trying “at home” products that are meant to supplement a professional procedure. Admittedly most of them leave me flat. I mean sure- my skin feels nice, and I guess it looks moisturized- but no glow. No polish.
Due to my loud lamenting, Jan Marini Skin Research kindly sent me their new Clean Zyme and Skin Zyme products to try. Jan Marini produces medical grade skin care and I’ve got to tell you- I’m impressed, both with the ingredients as well as the way that they are supposed to be used. Lets dish.
Clean Zyme Cleanser and Skin Zyme Mask are made to be supplemental home care exfoliation products. These products, used together have the ability to remove dead skin cells without harming sensitive or irritated tissues. The ingredient in these that really caught my eye is proteolytic enzymes. Proteolytic enzymes are often ingested as a way of combatting inflammation and boosting the immune system- I was not aware of them being used topically.
After doing some research, it turns out that proteolytic enzymes, with continued use, can actually improve both epidermal and dermal properties. This is pretty major and is similar to results observed with higher concentrations of AHAs (alpha hydroxy acids). Now I was really intrigued.
The other key ingredient is “papain” which is derived from green unripened papaya. This is another well known anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. So the ingredients behind these products are stellar for exfoliation without inflammation.
The directions for use were also quite different than what I typically see in at-home facial treatments. The actual procedural directions were similar to what I’ve received in past professional settings.
CLEAN ZYME CLEANSER- “..should be applied in place of regular cleanser and left on 1 to 2 minutes. Remove with a clean, wet and wrung out washcloth using lukewarm water. Blot Dry.”
SKIN ZYME FACE MASK- “Apply in a thin, even layer over entire face (and neck if desired) and allow to remain for up to 20 minutes. To remove SKIN ZYME, apply a small amount of CLEAN ZYME to face and massage to achieve emulsification. Remove with a washcloth and splash face 10-15 times with lukewarm water. Blot dry.”
I followed the directions explicitly. The products have a faint, fruit-like fragrance.
The cleanser is a thin, clear-green gel that spreads easily onto the face. It feels cool and clean on the skin. This is not something to use to remove eye makeup- as it should be kept away from the eyes.
The mask is a thick, brownish green color and is easily spread in a thin layer all over the face. The mask feels amazing. It’s cool, and even a little tingly but not in a chemical way. This is a mask that you can FEEL working on those dead skin cells and essentially breaking the “glue” that holds them on your skins surface, giving it that dull appearance.
As always, ingredients are key and the results speak for themselves. Beautiful, healthy looking, polished skin! I snapped this completely makeup-free selfie about 5 minutes after removing the mask. I really could not be happier with the results of these products! My skin looks and feels moisturized, soft and glowing!
In my opinion, Jan Marini Skin Research Clean Zyme and Skin Zyme is a cleanser/mask duo that delivers and it does so without any irritation. If you are looking for a good at home facial, that does what it says on the box, I can highly recommend this brand. The dewy polished skin I achieved was well worth the time and effort for this at-home facial. You can shop this brand here——> Jan Marini Skin Research.

Thank you Lisa. I was completely new to JanMarini, but if these products are any example- I’ll be checking out more of the line. Proteolytic enzymes…..who knew they would work topically?? I really loved your piece on facials, because I think you really explained what a facial SHOULD be. Loved it.
You look fabulous after having used their products. definitely something I should try out. My face has been so dry lately it’s driving me nuts. Pinning this to my board.
Aw, this was an exceptionally nice post. Taking the time and
actual effort to create a top notch article… but what can I say…
I procrastinate a lot and don’t manage to
get anything done.
