Skincare has changed so much since the days of scrubbing your face with a facial scrub made of apricot pits (remember that?!!). You KNOW I’m skincare obsessed and I love diving into all the research. Science has produced real data and potent products that will be absorbed by the skin and over time will affect real improvements in our aging skin. I want to talk about 3 important skin serums for women over 40, why they are important, how to choose quality serums and how to work them into your skincare routine.

Vitamin C
Vitamin C is an antioxidant – it combats free radicals. Free radicals damage your skin and can come from loads of everyday things like UVA exposure (the sun), tobacco smoke, pollution in the air, just to name a few. Free radicals damage the collagen production and the elastin in your skin. As you age, your body will produce less and less natural antioxidants, allowing the free radicals to do their damage faster than the antioxidants can keep up with- so it’s important to supplement with diet and topical solutions. Vitamin C is a precursor to collagen production and can reverse sun damage! There are proven studies to show that Vitamin C can calm irritation and soothe the skin, brighten, and smooth fine lines and wrinkles. So yeah- definitely one of the 3 important skin serums for women over 40 that you need in your arsenal.

Hyaluronic Acid Serum
Hyaluronic Acid is a humectant. It acts to pull water to the top layer of the skin which hydrates the top layer of the skin. This allows the top layer to hold in water and “plump” temporarily. Obviously, for aging skin, anything that will help it to appear more moisturized, smooth and “plumped” is something to be desired! Hyaluronic acid is non-irritating and gentle, so it’s really a no brainer as another one of the 3 important skin serums for women over 40. I wrote more in-depth about hyaluronic acid here.

Retinol Serum
If you are NOT already using prescription Retin-A on your face, neck, chest and the backs of your hands, then you will want to add a retinol serum to your skincare routine. I wrote here about how I get my prescription strength Retin A online. Retinol is a milder form of Retin A that the body must convert to get the same potency as pure Retin A. So, in a nutshell- it still works……it just works slower. Even though I use Retin A on my face, I use a retinol serum on my neck and chest as these tend to be more sensitive to the strength of Retin A. Since Retinoids are the only topical ingredient proven in countless studies, to quite literally REVERSE the signs of aging,… you’re going to want to add this guy to your skincare line up.

Quality Serums
It is extremely important to choose quality serums that are formulated correctly so that they have the very best chance of actually penetrating into the skin where they can perform the benefits that you are looking for. Many MANY over the counter serums will not get past the skin barrier and are a complete waste of your money. I recently switched to “Go Pure” for this very reason.
Pro tip: Your Vit. C serum should never be orange. If it’s orange, oxidization has occurred and it’s fairly useless.
There are a host of things from oxidization to formulations with added, helpful ingredients that can help or hurt the efficacy and potency of a serum. After doing loads of research on this, I have switched from the Timeless brand to the Go Pure brand serums. Go Pure gave me their trio of potent serums to try. As I began using them, I also dove into a ton of research about these serums and I am sticking with Go Pure. Their formulations are stable and have the added ingredients that will actually help the serums to get deeper into my skin where I need them to do
Each of the serums is lovely and lightweight. The Vit C serum produces a brightening effect and the hyaluronic acid provides a lovely, moisturized “plumping” right away. They aren’t sticky and they all absorb into the skin immediately. In a word- they do what they are supposed to at a price point that fits my budget. At under $40 for ALL THREE serums (a several month
Go Pure is giving my readers 10% off if you use the code FRESHAIRANDFALSELASHES10 when you check out. This code will work indefinitely.

I highly recommend these serums for their quality as well as their price. I’m sure you will be hearing more about this brand on my site. š

These sound amazing; I’m going to try these when I’m in the States later this year. I love a good serum; since my skin is usually oily serums work so much better for me than creams. Girl, when YOU talk skin care, I am all ears. xxx
Thank you Lisa! So sweet. So happy you’re back on the web. We will probably cross in the air or something but I may be in London in a few months……….maybe I’ll bring a set? (And some Saltines?? š )

Excellent advice! Those would be my go to suggestions for seeing the biggest results too. I’ll have to look into this brand, thank you!
Thank you Pam! That means a lot coming from an expert!

Hi . How do these compare to the ordinary products ?
Hi Nausheen!
I need to do a full trial for comparison, but I do know that the Vit C serum in these is a more stable form, so the serum itself lasts longer before becoming ineffective. I just re-ordered, so maybe I’ll grab the Ordinary (which IS a reputable company imo) and do a full trial. Thanks so much for stopping by and for asking!
